I found my first antique bottle when I was five years old. By the time I was twelve, I had made hundreds of bottle finds, Colonial and Civil War artifact finds, and eyeballed a silver coin cache from the 1890-1910 period, with a face value of forty seven dollars. I got my first metal detector at the age of fourteen, in 1971. I am an old school Civil War relic hunter, and I have been using a metal detector for forty-eight years.
I often am asked by the new breed of relic hunters about my success. It's very simple really. I've spent tens of thousands of hours researching, criss crossing plowed fields, forging across salt water marshes, crashing through underbrush entangled sea islands, and dodging cow pies on farm pastures filled with cattle, and all the while swinging a metal detector. Anyone doing this for as long as I have, you eventually have to find something!
