Description
Welcome to this channel of GeTai. GeTai is a local unique culture in Singapore. Getai emerged in Singapore during the Japanese occupation in 1940. GeTai (Chinese: 歌台) is a boisterous live stage performance held during the Ghost Festival and other Chinese festival, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is commonly held in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Stage setup is usually composed of temporary structures and situated in the suburbs of the city, parking spaces or housing estates. Younger people may relate to GeTai as kitsch, while older people enjoy dancing and singing along to familiar songs. Performers normally don loud and glittery clothings. Some GeTai hosts indulge in crude humour; others maintain a quick-witted dialogue, sometimes switching between Mandarin, local Chinese dialects, English and Indian languages. From Mar 2020, Getai are now held digitally via streaming platform websites such as YouTube, Facebook and its government website due to the coronavirus outbreak.
